Synthetic and Systems Biology of Microalgae
Synthetic Biology

Our civilization is facing critical agricultural, environmental, industrial and economic challenges. Synthetic and systems biology offer new opportunities to answer fundamental questions and to design innovative molecular tools, eventually enabling a second green revolution. We study the biology of phototrophic microorganisms, notably their inherent ability to convert CO2 into valuable molecules. We use multidisciplinary approaches combining systems biology, synthetic biology, molecular biology, biochemistry, chemobiology, protein engineering, proteomics, structural biology, genetics and cell biology. Our studies are mainly focused on Chlamydomonas reinhardtii, a well-documented model alga with high biotechnological potential.
We are interested in photosynthetic carbon fixation, the synthetic and structural biochemistry of enzymes, redox signalling networks, and the adaptations to environmental stresses in microalgae. We are developing new approaches and knowledge to improve the photosynthetic organisms inherent ability to fix CO2 to produce organic molecules in a sustainable and sunlight-dependent process, combining fundamental understanding and practical biotechnological applications.
